Cathedral y Giralda, Sevilla

The Giralda ("weather wane") was originally constructed in 1184-98 as the minaret of the Seville mosque. The top story was added in the 16th century. The tower now stands 98 meters high. "Let us build a cathedral so immense that everyone, on beholding it, will take us for madmen", was supposedly the stated objective when the construction of Seville's Cathedral started in 1401. Arguably they succeeded: the cathedral, completed in 1507, is the third largest in Europe (after St Peter in Rome and St Paul in London). The cathedral houses the tomb of Christopher Columbus (Monumento de Cristóbal Colón) and many treasures.
